Butterfly Lifecycle Activity

Greetings Parents!!!!

We have had a wonderful week! Everybody has been working very hard.

As you know we have been learning about life cycles for the past few weeks. And the students have had some extra-special guests in our class---caterpillars! The students collaborated to take care of them and name them: Heimlih, Dot, and Flik.

Buzz Lightyear really enjoyed watching them crawl all over their tank!

We then read the Very Hungry Caterpillar  by Eric Carle and talked about what to feed our new friends. Minnie wanted to feed them candy like in the book, while Winnie the Pooh wanted to feed them vegetables because they are healty. We eventually decided to feed them leaves like in the beginning of the book.

On Thursday we had a surprise in the morning! The caterpillars were gone! They had tranformed into their chrysalis forms!! Heimlih, Dot, and Flik are going to emerge soon as beautiful butterflies. But what color will they be? The students each designed a butterfly and predicted what they will look like. Minnie thought they would be pink, Buzz Lightyear thought they would be green, Winnie the Pooh thought they would be yellow and red, and Elsa thought they would be light blue. We'll see soon! Parents, what color do you think they will be?

Next week when our butterfly friends are ready to emerge, we'll see who predicted the right color!

Weekly Schedule--Week 1

Hello parents! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! This year I will post all weekly schedules and important information on this blog as well as send home a paper copy in your child's binder.

The following are the notes for paricular days:

  • Monday--First day of school!!!!!! Please remind your child to get a full night's sleep so he/she will be ready to participate in all of the fun activities planned.

Tuesday--Bring in a picture of what you did this summer to share with the class (It may be a copy or an original. All pictures will be sent back home in the students' binders.

Wednesday--Show & Tell! Students may bring in an item that they would like to show the class. This is meant to be a way for students to get to know each other (as well as so I can get to know them). Please don't send anything valuble or inappropriate for everyone in the class.

Thursday--Friday we will be picking "names" to go by on this Blog. Students may pick any Disney name they would like (as long as it has not already been taken). We will talk about this in class and I will write the child's "name" on their weekly report to go home on Friday. **Please do not use any student's real name on this blog for safety reasons.**

    Friday--Have a wonderful weekend!

Purpose of Blog

This blog is a practice activity for EDM 510 at the University of South Alabama. The topic that will be dicussed will be an example (immaaginary) a K-6 special education teacher's classroom blog. It is not intended for students to use independently, but rather for parents to use in order to keep up to date on classrom/school activities, what's going on in the classroom, and a place to ask questions. This will be beneficial to the parents because some children may be non-verbal or have difficulty expressing what they have been doing at school. With this blog, parents can see what their children have been doing and keep track of important dates. Each student will have picked a Disney character to be known by online so that real names will not appear. Parents will know their student's chosen name. Any pictures will have the students face blurred out, or be taken so no faces appear.
